A note to big dog breeders

Are you a big dog breeder?

If you are, and your homepages promote not only your kennels, but the breed of your choice as a whole, then why not send me a note here and I will check it out and post a link in our Big Dog breeders section.

A link back here would be nice but it is not mandatory. The main thing is that your site promotes your breed of choice.

What do I feed my Big Dog? How much does a big dog eat?

Well I can tell you right now

The answer is "A lot" especially as puppies but they do tend to eat less once full grown, feeding a big dog is nevertheless an expense and should be considered when deciding to bring a Giant Breed of dog into your home.

So what? and How much well there are a number of options with regards to the what, here are the most common or accepted feeding regime:

Kibble: this is the common name for the dry biscuit type dog food, it is easy to manage, and for those with a hectic lifestyle is often the dog food of choice. I personally am not sure that it is the complete answer. I supplement my dogs food with kibble added to it for the "Crunch factor" and not really for the ingredients. Having said that I am careful to add the appropriate kibble for my dogs; Giant breed puppy for Jaks, and senior dog for Flagg. The kibble has different balances of carbs and protein and giant breed puppy is designed to ensure your big dog baby doesn't grow too fast, VERY important.

BARF: This is a raw food diet for your dogs and has been succesfully adopted by several dog breeders/ owners that I know. On a personal note I have the attitude that I really don't want to feed my boys anything I wouldn't eat myself (With the exception of tripe(cow stomach)), so as I am not a lover of raw meat I tend to give this a miss :) I do believe this is a better option than simply feeding your dogs kibble though and if you are interested you can read more about BARF here.

RMB: RMB stands for Raw Meaty Bones and that forms the basis of this diet for dogs, again I have spoken to owners and breeders who have had a great deal of success with this diet but it is not for me. IMPORTANT the RMB diet is more than simply giving your dog a bone if you are interested you can find out more about the diet here.

SO all that's great but what do you feed Jaks and Flagg???? OK here is my answer to the dog food dillema; as I have already mentioned I supplement the dogs food with an appropriate kibble. The rest I cook for them myself. about 2 or 3 times a week I do a huge saucepan of delicious home cooked dog food. This way I know exactly what is going into my dogs and I can monitor their looks, coats, and yep you guessed it Poop!! And make changes appropriately. If you are thinking what goes into my home made dog food, well it varies but here are the base ingredients, chicken, chicken heart, chicken liver, chicken necks. Beef, beef liver, beef heart, beef bones. Carrots, potatoes, rice, pasta, good vegetable oils with added omega 3, beans and other roughage veggies. Fruit Jaks loves pears, he would kill for a pear.. apples, oranges, tomatoes and cucumbers. one word of note if you are thinking of this.. No ONIONS.

Well there you have it, a brief summary of dog food options. If you like the idea of cooking for your dog, don't overcook the food, the more you cook the more you remove vitamins.

Whatever you choose, have fun and have a healthy, happy and loving big dog.
