A note to big dog breeders

Are you a big dog breeder?

If you are, and your homepages promote not only your kennels, but the breed of your choice as a whole, then why not send me a note here and I will check it out and post a link in our Big Dog breeders section.

A link back here would be nice but it is not mandatory. The main thing is that your site promotes your breed of choice.

If you already own a big dog you know what this title is about. If you are thinking of taking a big dog into your home, then this will help in a couple of ways; not least to let you know what you are in for, and also you can get your home prepared before you go collect your puppy :)

A friend from the Irish Wolfhound International forums, suggested this topic: Thanks Alexis :) . She also asked if I have coffee tables! She doesn't now, they have shelves on the walls where they have their sofas! If you have a big dog, then this is good strategy, Jaks is not yet 6 months old and he can cruise the worktops in our kitchen! A coffee table is simply a large feeding bowl to him, also with a bullwhip tail, anything could go flying. We have a slightly different approach in our house in as much as the coffee tables are defended on all sides by a combination of walls and sofas.

Floors are interesting too when you have a big dog: Laminate floors are a nightmare for them, they slide and as they get to be even bigger dogs, they have more and more trouble standing up!, I have laminate floors and believe me, it is not scratch proof from big dog claws, also for the sake of my dogs, you can hardly see the floor for rugs, a big 4x5 meter rug in the living area, one at the bottom of the stairs, a long one in the hall going to the dining room..... you get the picture.

Stone tiles are quite good, dogs can still slip but not as much and they are more resistant to scratches, wooden floors are somewhat less slippy but they are much more prone to scratching. Carpets of course are a dogs best friend! Comfortable to lay on, easy to romp on and get up, easily chewed! and harder to clean! I personally like the rug solution as I can change them easier than carpet, also I buy large carpet off-cuts and get the edges bound, this usually runs out cheaper than buying new fitted carpet. If I were planning my house again for my big dog.... Well I would have natural wood and or stone tiles and rugs.

Once again I will point out that I aim to keep the big dog blog organic and I will update with any new stuff as and when, if you have any suggestions please drop me a note here.
