A note to big dog breeders

Are you a big dog breeder?

If you are, and your homepages promote not only your kennels, but the breed of your choice as a whole, then why not send me a note here and I will check it out and post a link in our Big Dog breeders section.

A link back here would be nice but it is not mandatory. The main thing is that your site promotes your breed of choice.

Well the big day comes and if you are like me your off to pick up your puppy Laughing

OK so I went quite a way, over 2000 kilometers round trip! Well I had spent a year finding my puppy, 2000 klicks on top isn't much more to add... Hmnn did I mention it was the middle of winter and thick snow! I swear he is worth every kilometer.

Right so you are ready to go, or are you? Is your car suitable? Can your new puppy get over to you in the drivers seat? (50kg of puppy in your lap is no slight thing at 60mph!) Will someone be joining you to control, care for your pup? Have you got food, blankets, toys, water? What if you break down? got a tow rope, jump cables, emergency triangle?

Hmnn a lot to think of,  but those things certainly matter so lets list these things out:

Firstly is your car suitable? This realy matters, if you have a long way to drive with a big dog puppy in your car can you really expect him to be happpy scrunched up on the back seat of a mini? I drive a jeep cherokee (an old one I might add) and with the back seats down my wolfhound puppy was just about comfortable doing a long journey.

Can your puppy get to you whilst driving this is VERY IMPORTANT: If you don't have someone with you to control your new pup then you need another solution; a dog guard like this which will prevent the dog climbing over to you, or a large travel cage like this one. Do not think my old Red never jumped in my lap why should this puppy it will want to see you and has no idea that you are travelling down a small country road at 60mph!

Traveling any distance means you will need a good stable food bowl I use one like this but any will do as long as it is big bottomed for stability, most important on any journey is to have water at hand for your dog  I have a neat bottle which has a trough shaped bowl which folds out under the cap my oldest dog loves it, I am sure it is the attention factor. Here is an example.

Don't forget your toys to keep him amused on a long journey Kongs are rated to be nearly indestructible but they do have a definate lifespan with wolfhounds, I would expect this would be true of most other big dogs, you can see the Kong toy range here if you don't already know it. It is also a good idea to bring along an old blanket with the smells of your home on, this gives your pup time to become familiar with them and will help him settle in on arrival, an old jumper ios a good idea too. If you have a dag at home already give the blanket to him a couple of nights before you go to pick up your puppy.

Well don't forget your breakdown kit, flask of coffee, road map, bar of chocolate oh and remeber ENJOY YOURSELF this doesn't happen every day.
